Bold Text in a LinkedIn Headline

You can paste bold characters into your headline. Whether you should is a different question, because the headline is also what search reads.

Select text, then pick a style. Nothing is selected? The word at your cursor is styled.

Good to know
  • Styled text is made of special characters. It pastes into LinkedIn as it looks here, but it is not searchable and some screen readers read it badly. Use it for emphasis, not whole posts.
  • LinkedIn sometimes removes empty lines when you paste. “Keep blank lines” puts one invisible character on each empty line so your spacing survives. Turn it off if you would rather copy the text exactly as typed.
  • A web address in your post shows a link card in the preview, as LinkedIn does. LekhKit cannot load other sites, so it shows the domain; LinkedIn fills in the real title and picture.
  • Attachments and mentions are preview only. Copying carries text, so add media and tag people inside LinkedIn.
  • The counter counts each styled letter as 2 characters to stay on the safe side. LinkedIn’s own count may differ.

The trade-off

Bold characters are different from normal ones. A search for the plain word may not match your bolded one, and the headline is one of the places LinkedIn search looks first. Keep your main job title and keywords in plain text.

A safer approach

Headline limit

A LinkedIn headline can be up to 220 characters. Styled characters can count for more than they look, so check the length.

Frequently asked questions

Will bold hurt my profile in search?

It can, if your important keywords are in bold. Keep them in plain text.
